Rembrandt van Rijn, Officers and Men of the Amsterdam Kloveniers Militia, the Company of Captain Frans Banning Cocq, signed and dated ‘Rembrandt f 1642’, canvas, 363 x 438 cm, Amsterdam, Rijksmuseum

The seventeenth century saw an unparalleled output of art in the Republic of the United Provinces. The number of paintings and prints produced during this period is staggering, and very many of them are of outstanding quality. Perhaps the most famous painting is the work by Rembrandt known as The Night Watch. It is a group portrait of a militia company. These were groups of able-bodied men who, if the need arose, could be called upon to defend the city or put down riots. The painting depicts the company of Captain Frans Banning Cocq and his lieutenant, Willem van Ruytenburgh, surrounded by sixteen of their men. A shield above the gate bears the names of the eighteen people in the portrait, who paid for the work. The other people who appear in the painting were added by Rembrandt with an eye to enhancing the composition. He must have been given the commission in 1639 or soon afterwards.

Yes my friend,... this is one storm in "The Night Watch" that was the beginning of this artist Rembrandt's down fall. This painting was painted in the same year as his wife Saskia's death. Little did Rembrandt know, but he thought he could make people see what he could do, when he put his mind to it, and what he had painted into this work of art,.. the hidden premice. Unfortunately that was not the case. I also am aware,... what I see myself is exactly what he had painted and what he expected some to see. I also know that most everyone will not see it,... even after telling you how to look at it. This painting has been written about in many books about this artist,... and the big question,... what could reveil it secret, yet not one can see what it is and has been said about it. Here goes my own theory one more time. Look for the singer of songs on the stage. Then pair the ones you see with their partners which you cannot readily see. Relax your eyes if you can, while waiting for the dance to begin. The musical band is already playing my friends,... in the bottom right-hand corner. When and if you are able to pair them up with their right partner, they will begin moving with the music, and looking back at the band, you can watch them play their music in movement. Cheers! have yourselves another drink,... and try to be marry.
