jerry yang... who?!!!

Yahoo to replace Yang… this is a real shocker. I remember in varsity (USM)… some of my faculty mates were busy sending ‘online flowers’ to their gfs from the faculty lab using Yahoo mail. I only had the USM email account (at first)… in boring text fonts and had to queue to use the terminals. These faculty dudes were already into Yahoo so fast… this was in 1995… the excitement was everywhere… electrifying.

Net connection is only found in varsity labs or some funky internet cafes outside campus back then… with network speeds not much different from now. I just can’t understand why Malaysia cannot improve the broadband speed and move with the times. Chat rooms and bulletin boards just mushroomed… everyone wanted to ‘talk’ with everyone else… its like using the telephone for the first time. My Yahoo account is almost 10 years now!

Anyway, before Google… Yahoo had the ultimate search engine… I suppose it was also driven by the porn site searches and just the dotCom excitement... to be IN the ‘web’. My favourite use of Yahoo in campus is to search for anything GIS… lotsa GIS technical articles and online lessons over the web (mainly from US). These tech articles, news and tips were so valuable… I aced my GIS projects… often leaving others bewildered at my IT skills… standing on the shoulder of giants... :-)
